GoPro launches new motorsports HD Hero2 camera, promises wifi BacPac

GoPro HD Hero2

There's a new way to GoPro and it's called the HD Hero2. It updates the original HD Hero with features like faster image processing, a lens that's "twice as sharp," 11 megapixel photos and better low-light imaging. More importantly, and much more in demand, are a better on-camera user interface and a slate of wifi remote products to be released in the winter, including a wifi BacPac, that will allow you to control the Hero2 with your phone, tablet or computer and instantly stream footage.

You'll find it at GoPro.com and Best Buy for $299.99, and you'll find a press release with all of the new features after the jump. Oh, and for what it's worth, the original GoPro Hero has dropped in price to as low as $199.99 for those looking to save a Benjamin.

Mercedes-Benz working on carbon fiber E-Class?

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

A few years ago if you wanted a Mercedes-Benz Coupe your only choices were the dandyish CLK two-door or spending the GDP of a Polynesian island on an SL or CL. The options have grown - and grown more manly - lately, and according to a story in Auto Bild there's another one coming: the E-Class Superlight.

With a rumored arrival of 2015, this rethink of the E will weigh just 2,860 pounds, meaning it would shed 770 pounds compared to the current E Coupe. How? By being "made of super lightweight carbon fiber." Powerplants for the model are suggested to be a six-cylinder gas with a hybrid motor, or a fuel-cell hybrid.

If true, this is presented as Mercedes' response to BMW and Audi moves into plastics and light weight. And this wouldn't be the only challenger from Benz, with a lightweight B and an SCS also said to be in the works.

Final Numbers: 2011 Detroit Auto Show was bigger than 2010 in every way

Filed under:

Detroit Auto Show

The 2011 North American International Auto Show wasn't exactly chock-full of game-changing new product, but that didn't keep the media and public from making it a much bigger success than the 2010 show. Crain's Detroit Business reports that the 2011 Detroit Auto Show held 5,000 members of the international media during press days and 21,000 guests (5,000 more than in 2010) during the two-day industry preview. The annual charity preview saw another 10,500 guests, raising $2.6 million for charity.

That's good news, but the top headlines for the struggling Detroit area are reserved for the $325 to $350 million in total estimated economic impact - about $25 million more than in 2010. A grand total of 735,370 members of the general public purchased tickets to NAIAS; up 20,000 from the 2010 show. Now that's certainly a step in the right direction.

Mika Hakkinen returns for Le Mans series debut in Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3

Mika Hakkinen with Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3

Despite what longtime rival Michael Schumacher might have to say about it, when you're a multiple Formula One world champion, you don't have anything left to prove. That leaves you free to do pretty much whatever you want with the rest of your life.

In the case of Mika Hakkinen, that has involved a handful of seasons (and a few wins) driving for Mercedes-Benz in the DTM series, but when he'd had his fill, that was it. He's essentially been retired since the end of 2007 season, but is about to don his racing helmet one more time for a race in China.

The race in question is the 1000 km of Zhuhai, the Chinese round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. That's where he'll be sharing a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 with Lance David Arnold and Cong Fu Cheng in the AMG Customer Sports Team China as the squad's guest driver.

It'll be the first time in a career dominated by formula racing that Hakkinen, now 43 years old, will be competing in a sports racer, and should be an interesting spectacle. Follow the jump for the full press release.

Report: Lotus city car confirmed for 2013

Lotus City Car

Lotus unveiled a flurry of new concept models earlier this year at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Five brand-new concepts took center stage, but there was a sixth vehicle unveiled that got far less press - the Lotus City Car. According to CAR Magazine, Lotus head Dany Bahar says that the City Car will arrive in production form for an October 2013 launch date.

The City Car rides on a platform developed for a range-extended hybrid powertrain. A 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine powers electric drive motors, which are mated to a single-speed transmission. This means that around town, the Lotus City Car will be able to run solely on battery power, while the gasoline engine can kick on for needed assistance if necessary.

Lotus is planning to build three versions of the City Car; one for Asia, a European version and eventually a sportier model.

Mommies on Minivans: Practical, but where's the style?

Toyota can call the Sienna a swagger wagon all it wants, but the slogan isn't going to make moms any happier about hopping behind the wheel. According to The Detroit Free Press, most mothers aren't fooled by gimmicky marketing or the latest attempts to redesign the minivan as a stylish piece of transportation. Reporter Krista Jahnke followed a group of mothers from Detroit.MomsLikeMe.com as they toured the Detroit Auto Show to critique the latest wave of minivans.

What did they think? While the vast majority appreciated the added creature comforts of the newest generation of family haulers, they still seemed to feel that the minivan was always going to be a practical choice first and an aesthetic one dead last.

One woman even admitted that she cried the first time she had to drive a minivan. Admittedly, we feel her pain.

The crew took the time to check out the all-new Ford C-Max, Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Dodge Grand Caravan and Volkswagen Routan, and was kind enough share its opinion on each. Despite its significantly smaller size, the C-Max fared well amongst those who know minivans best, while the Grand Caravan was penalized for its cavernous, grime-trapping center console. Head over to The Detroit Free Press to see all of their impressions.

TAS 2010: Toyota MR2 Sports Hybrid concept packing 400-hp 3.3-liter V6, AWD [w/video]

Toyota MR2 Sports Hybrid Concept - Click above for image gallery

Back in November, the rumormill was set ablaze when reports began to surface that Toyota was working on a new MR2 packing hybrid power. Today, those rumors have been laid to rest... kinda.

In addition to the G Sport Series FT-86 and Prius, Toyota trotted out a concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon based on the third generation MR-S (ZZW30). Although the MR2 was nixed in the U.S. in 2005 (and in Japan in 2007), Toyota and its partners at Gazoo saw fit to resurrect its midship drop-top by fitting a 3.3-liter V6 where the old 1.8-liter four-cylinder used to reside and an electric motor mated to a THSII hybrid system up front. That's right, the MR2 Sports Hybrid Concept is all-wheel drive, and between the two mills, it's churning out over 400 horsepower through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

But despite its boosted output, the 2,800-pound concept is a bit on the porky side compared to its 2,200-pound predecessor. Toyota claims it can run to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds - still better than the stock ZZW30, but at what a cost to the MR2's supreme chuckability? While there's no chance of Toyota putting the MR2 Sports Hybrid Concept into production, this could point the way for things to come - for better or worse. Make the jump for a promo video.

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne answering questions - Click above to read more

We told Autoblog readers that we had a few questions for auto executives at the North American International Auto Show that we would be asking. We did get to ask most of our questions, but even better, we got to ask a bunch of questions that you, our readers had.

We didn't get to all of them, but we are going to do our best via follow-up email, as well as the upcoming Washington DC and Chicago auto shows. Stay tuned for another column where we tackle even more of your questions. This is just Part One.

Q: Can we get a diesel Jeep Wrangler?
A: Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said a diesel is very desirable in the Wrangler and a distinct possibility. There is demand for it. Other Chrysler execs even told Autoblog there is a business case trying to be made. Stay tuned.

Q: How about a Focus SVT?
A: You got it. Except it's called the Focus ST, like in Europe. Ford decided it should have one nomenclature worldwide.

Q: Ford Global rear-drive platform for a Lincoln luxury car?
A: Chief marketer James Farley says he doesn't believe that Lincoln really needs an up-market luxury car to thrive. He says the heart of the luxury market going forward is $30,000-$50,000. More important than an up-market rear-wheel-drive sports car is the entry level Lincoln being developed off the Focus platform. That will be pieced under the new MKZ, which will have a design distinct from the next Fusion.

Next-gen Viper may get 8.7-liter V10

2013 Dodge Viper testing

Word has it that Chrysler may be planning an increase in displacement for the 2013 Dodge Viper. According to the Dodge-obsessed crew at Allpar, the vehicle's V10 engine may jump from 8.4 liters to 8.7, making it the largest lump Chrysler has ever placed in a passenger car. Allpar doesn't say exactly where the report originates from, though upping the vehicle's displacement certainly fits the brash character of the Viper. We have to wonder what sort of tricks the company will employ to keep fuel consumption and emissions at reasonable levels, however.

The same report also repeats the fact that the vehicle will be manufactured in 2012 as 2013 model. That certainly runs contrary to those whispers we heard about the 2013 Viper receiving a clandestine unveil at a Florida charity event.

If Ford Mustang Boss 302 owners use TracKey, will their warranty be shortened?

Word has it that the Ford TracKey feature available on the Mustang Boss 302 will come with some interesting fine print. According to Mustangs Daily, owners who opt to have TracKey installed at their local Ford dealer will have to endure a three-year, 36,000-mile powertrain warranty. That's noticeably shorter than the five-year, 60,000-mile warranty that comes standard on the Mustang Boss 302. In addition, owners who decide to bolt on any extra performance modifications in conjunction with TracKey will see their warranty completely voided. Ford says that aftermarket modifications could cause severe engine damage.

Despite the shortened warranty, Mustangs Daily reports that Ford doesn't expect any reliability issues with TracKey. The company says that its engineers have done all of the necessary homework on the system.

From the sound of things, Ford is simply protecting itself from abusive owners who may seek to take advantage of a race car with a warranty. We'll learn more once Ford officially debuts TracKey at SEMA in Las Vegas in a few weeks.

Paris 2010: Is the Venturi America EV Dune Buggy another awesome EV we'll never see?

Venturi America EV Dune Buggy
Venturi America EV Dune Buggy - Click above for high-res image gallery

Venturi was last seen in America a couple of months ago, blasting across the white crystals at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the guise of the Buckeye Bullet. At the Paris Motor Show, the Monegasque company revealed a different kind of terrain-blasting machine called the America EV Dune Buggy - a jacked-up, 300-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive electric sports car as open and free as the great land it's named after.

The interior would be admirably minimal if things hadn't got cluttered up around the console screen, but the center tunnel buttons are a chunky, metallic pleasure to behold. The single display in front of the driver will hopefully present information clearly enough to keep your eyes on the road and your hair in the wind. And we aren't sure what kind of stereo is involved, but based on the speakers it looks pretty serious.

As for actually getting behind the wheel and exploring the roadster's namesake country, a retail source for Venturis has just landed in Columbus, Ohio, which means we might one day see something from the automaker outside of a blog post. But that's the future, folks - for now, there's a press release in its familiar place and a gallery of high-res photos below.

Maserati claims title in Superstars Series with Quattroporte Evo

Andrea Bertolini wins 2011 Superstars Series with Maserati Quattroporte Evo

We'll forgive you if you haven't heard of the Superstars Series. It's only been around since 2004 (the International category since 2007) and all of the races take place in Europe - in fact over half took place this season in Italy. But similar to other national touring car championships - Germany's DTM, Japan's Super GT and Australia's V8 Supercars come to mind - the Superstars Series packs some serious racing machinery.

Take the Maserati Quattroporte EVO, for example. If that sounds badass to you, just look at the thing, because it is. It's based, of course, on the Trident marque's four-door model, which is already desirable enough on its own, but has been race prepped with an extreme wide-body kit and all the trimmings. It's the car with which Andrea Bertolini - a long-time Ferrari and Maserati factory driver who took the FIA GT1 championship in the MC12 he helped develop - and his Swiss Team just clinched the championship.

It's the first time that a Maserati has won the series title, previous champions having raced cars based on the BMW M3, Audi RS4 and Jaguar S-Type R. The formula calls for V8 engines, no turbos, based on four-seaters with two doors or four, and the rest of the field is made up of everything from the Chevy Lumina (a rebadged Holden) and Cadillac CTS-V to the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and Porsche Panamera S. All in all, ten marques are represented, but this year Maserati was crowned champion of them all. Check out the machine with which they did it in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.

Holden Dealer Team brings out VE Retro Commodore

While the Holden Commodore VE had a rather short visit to the U.S. in the form of the Pontiac G8, it's still in production Down Under - and still a worthy platform for hotted-up special editions. This one comes from none other than Holden Dealer Team, the revived tuner once owned by Aussie racing legend Peter Brock.

The theme here is a time machine tribute to the 1986 Holden Commodore VL Group A Plus Pack, the car that led to Brock famously severing his ties with Holden. The row was the result of Brock's insistence in fitting an "Energy Polarizer" to the Plus Pack cars, a device containing crystals and magnets that the new age race driver claimed improved the performance of the cars through a process of molecular realignment.

Well, not only has the VL-series Group A look come back, but so too has the Energy Polarizer, one of which will be fitted to all 250 of the HDT VL Group A Plus Pack Heritage Series cars. Perhaps more importantly, these special HDT Commodores will receive a 470-horsepower, supercharged 6.0-liter LS V8. Other kit includes a Bilstein suspension package, complete body kit including hood scoop, Harrop performance braking package, 20-inch wheels, and a customized interior.

McLaren releases montage of MP4-12C lapping 'Ring in 7 min, 28 sec

McLaren MP4-12C at the Nurburgring

It's finally happened. The good people at McLaren have taken their latest wonder child, the MP4-12C, out for a bit of abuse around the Nürburgring to see how the supercar would perform on one of the world's greatest road courses. With Horst von Saurma-Jeltsch, Editor In Chief of Sport Auto, behind the wheel, the Mclaren MP4-12C was able to clip around the 'Ring in seven minutes and 28 seconds. That puts the carbon-fiber creation just ahead of vehicles like the Porsche 911 GT3 and Pagani Zonda F and four seconds behind metal like the Gumpert Apollo Sport.

Unfortunately, the video after the jump isn't an uncut clip of the MP4-12C doing the deed. Instead, we're treated to a quick synopsis of the vehicle's development as well as a brief dissertation on what makes the Nürburgring so special to manufacturers and fans alike. Hopefully, the full-length footage will show up soon. Hit the jump to check it out for yourself.

Fans and competitors in the motorsports community are still reeling from the loss of Dan Wheldon in Las Vegas last weekend. The young driver's passing continues to be felt by anyone who has even the thinnest tether to racing, and NASCAR has announced that the organization will honor Wheldon in its own way during upcoming events at Talladega.

Organizers will provide unique Lionheart Knight decals for the B pillars of all trucks and cars competing during races at Talladega this weekend. Wheldon famously adorned each of his helmets with the image.

While some competitors are planning to honor Wheldon in their own ways, NASCAR is also providing Lionheart Knight helmet decals at inspection for those who wish to wear them. Click past the jump for the full press release.

Paris 2010: Ford pondering bringing five-door C-Max to U.S. [w/poll]

2011 Ford C-Max five-door
2011 Ford C-Max - Click above for high-res image gallery

Following the second press day at the Paris Motor Show at a drive event in Southern France, Ford's global vice president of marketing, Jim Farley, let slip to Autoblog that Dearborn decisionmakers are mulling over whether to import the C-Max to the U.S. As you'll recall, Ford has already committed to bringing over the C-Max's larger line mate, the seven-seat Grand C-Max, a vehicle that Farley tells us won't hit American soil until early in calendar 2012 (likely as a 2013 model).

Unlike its bigger brother, the C-Max has conventional front-hinged rear doors (the Grand has a pair of sliders) along with a more aggressive roofline and rear graphic to complement its shorter wheelbase. Think of it as more of a pent-roof Focus wagon and less of a smallish minivan in the mold of the Mazda5 and you've got it.

Interestingly, Farley maintains that Ford won't necessarily wait until the Grand C-Max goes on sale in the U.S. to determine whether or not to bring the model to America, and it will actively solicit feedback from both journalists and consumers to see if there's a business case to be made. While such language is common among PR folks looking to assuage media members always clamoring for the importation of forbidden automotive fruit, Farley sounded quite optimistic. Further, he reminded us that there was "absolutely no plan" initially to market the next-gen five-door Focus in the States, but that all changed after the 2007 Verve concept was met with an enthusiastic response from media members and show goers. A few years ago, we probably would have discounted such talk, but with CEO Alan Mulally and product chief Derrick Kuzak pushing the One Ford agenda globally, who knows? It might just make it Stateside after all.

If Ford does decide to bring the C-Max to America, it may have a minor naming conundrum to deal with. At the moment, the Grand C-Max moniker is expected to be shortened to just 'C-Max' when it goes on sale in the U.S., or the MPV might take on the name 'Focus C-Max,' though a final decision has not yet been made. As the Blue Oval won't sell both models with the same name, the five-door model would ostensibly need a different name.

Do you think the short-wheelbase C-Max would sell? Check out our high-resolution galleries of both models and then be sure to vote in our poll below. We'll have firsthand drive impressions of the European-spec C-Max range to share with you next week, so stay tuned.

How Audi created the e-tron Spyder

Making the Audi e-tron Spyder - Click above for high-res image gallery

Audi has pulled back the covers on how it created the e-tron Spyder for the Paris Motor Show, and it's giving us a rare glimpse into what went on behind the scenes. It took five months to turn the sketches into the Paris runway beauty, and Audi tells the story from the viewpoint of the designers modeling and how they balance styling with feasibility. Much of it was, of course, hand made, but even then it went beyond Audi's show-car usual, such as building wheels each containing 66 individual parts.

Not surprisingly, the tale begins like a superhero fable - "It is a functional, rectangular building with a gray facade - a hall like thousands of others in the industrial parks dotting our cities..." - and you'll find the details after the jump.

Mini: "The 500 is a darling little car... but we're a premium brand"

Mini showed off the Paceman Concept at this year's Detroit Auto Show and announced not long afterward that it would spawn a production model. Tom Salkowski, who recently moved from BMW USA to Mini USA to fill the role of marketing manager, will be the man charged with getting the word about about Mini's eighth model and the ones beyond. Here's what he had to tell us.
  • The small car segment has erupted over the past couple of years and "Mini has prospered" even though it "faced significantly more competition." But when asked what kind of head-to-head competitors the brand thinks it faces, Salkowski said "maybe Volkswagen, Mazda, Scion in the small-car segment," with the caveat that since "Mini is very much a mindset, it's different than other vehicles," so "for the time being we don't see anything." Head of product management Oliver Friedmann confirmed the assessment with, "We don't see any one-to-one competition, maybe the Evoque could be" for the Countryman.
  • Salkowski offered his thoughts on the Fiat 500 with, "The 500 is a darling little car, but Mini is a premium brand."
  • On the discussion of roots and heritage at other emotional brands like BMW and Lotus, when asked how big the Mini brand and Mini cars could get and still be considered Minis, Friedmann said, "That's what we try to find out at the moment. We just jumped over the four-meter line with the Countryman," but reaction in the three months that the crossover has been on sale in Europe has been "very positive."
  • Nevertheless, it's not about creating an acceptance of a Mini of any size. Friedman said, "The competitors for the Countryman are significantly larger. We will always stay the smallest in the segment." But the number one rejection of Mini is due to size and space, so the company had to do something.
  • Mini's been known for its irreverent advertising, and it doesn't sound like much will change under Salkowski, with a "bigger spend on television - you only get one chance to launch a car." There will also be a huge billboard in Times Square, and a take-off on Mini's original U.S. launch when they had a roving Ford Excursion driving around with a Mini on its roof. This time it will be a roving Countryman with a vintage Mini, Alec Issigonis' original, on its roof.
