Revealed: The production-ready 2012 Honda Civic
Honda has released photos and further information about its upcoming, ninth-generation Civic lineup. When we last saw the redesigned Civic at the Detroit auto show, the coupe and sedan on display were still in "concept" form. As we've come to learn from Honda, that means they were quite close to the production versions. Now, we have a full look at the vehicles, including the dashboard, along with basic engine specs. With the small-car market chasing 40-mpg-highway bragging rights, lead by the Chevrolet Cruze and Hyundai Elantra, Honda is claiming to go one better. One more mpg, that is. Honda is resurrecting the famed "HF" moniker, for its thriftiest standard edition. The "High Fuel economy" model will share the 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with other Civic models, but it will benefit from the aerodynamic upgrades given to the Civic Hybrid. Honda claims this will enable 41 mpg on the highway. The Civic Hybrid will use a 110-horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine teamed with a continuously variable transmission. For the first time, the Civic Hybrid will use a lithium-ion battery pack. The automaker cites an EPA-estimated combined (city and highway) fuel economy average of 45 mpg, an improvement of 4 mpg over the current model. (We got 37 mpg overall with our last Civic Hybrid.) Regular Civic models promise 39 mpg on the highway. The sporty Si models move from a high-strung 2.0-liter engine to a 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Horsepower edges up three ponies, but more significantly, torque has increased 31 lbs.-ft. Fuel economy climbs from 29 mpg highway to 31 mpg. There appears to be much carry-over with the new Civic, with familiar shapes and powertrains, but the company is poised to maintain its position as a popular small car. When it goes on sale, in late April, we'll buy the Civic to see how it fares against its new competition including the Cruze, Elantra, and upcoming Ford Focus.
